SPACER GENTAMYCININE (ORTHOPEDIC)

The most important advantages of the spacers that are produced and made ready for use compared
to the manually prepared spacers are as follows.
Mechanical strength is higher.
Antibiotic releases are standard and adequate.
Allows more movement in terms of design.
Their application does not prolong the surgical time.
In addition, pharmacologically, not every antibiotic is added to the cement. The spacers prepared
during the event are mechanically weaker and prone to breakage. Surfaces are more mismatched
and often allow less movement. Although the primary concern for spacers is the elution of the
antibiotic, it should be noted that the addition of high amounts of antibiotics will reduce the strength of the cement and increase the risk of breakage.
In general, the addition of more than 4.5 gr of antibiotics significantly weakens the cement.
Therefore, spacers prepared at the time of the event may not be healthy.
